This charming cast relief represents two children from the extended Charpentier family: Jean, who was the artist’s son, born in 1884, and Pierre, the son of his sister Emma, born in 1892. This date of 1892 corresponds to the date of the work for which this relief was created, a magnificent layette, which was exhibited at the Société Nationale des Beaux Arts in Brussels in 1893.
The layette was acquired by the King of Belgium for the Royal collection. Its two reliefs are Charpentier’s most famous: Jeune mère allaitant son enfant, and Jean et Pierre.
